Lent 2024 Book Study (Wrap-Up Session): Rivermouth

St. Peter’s invites everyone to read a book together for Lent. The chosen book is Rivermouth: A Chronicle of Language, Faith, and Migration, by fellow Chicagoan Alejandra Oliva. In Rivermouth, Oliva reflects on her experiences serving as a translator for asylum seekers by using three central metaphors: river, table, and wall. Behind her warm, personal tone is her theological education from Harvard Divinity School, her own faith questions, and her Mexican American family background.

We Christians often refer to Lent as a “journey,” and the Easter as a “border” between death and resurrection, both of which make Rivermouth apt for the season. Get your cup of coffee and circle up after the 10:00 AM service on the Sundays in Lent from 11:30 - 12:30 on February 18, 25, March 3, 10, 17, and 24. There will be a wrap-up session on April 7. Discussions will be grounded in respectful communication guidelines, including empathetic listening.

Rivermouth is available for purchase at Unabridged Bookstore on Broadway for $28 plus tax, and has been found for online purchase for as low as $20. Audiobook available by Audible. Use of the public library is encouraged too! If you need financial assistance to purchase the book, please speak with Mother Daphne.

Lent 2024 Bible Study on Zoom: Book of Jonah

Gather on Zoom with Mother Daphne for a Lent Bible study on the Book of Jonah. The Bible says Jonah was swallowed by an enormous fish, but why? What does this story teach us about our relationship with God, and about God? Starting with the second Friday in Lent, grab your lunch, tune into the Zoom link, and join with others in discovering this ancient story about repentance (a fancy word that means changing your mind). Since it’s on Zoom, feel free to invite your out-of-town friends and family! And it’s OK if you only come to a few of them.

Fridays, February 23, March 1, 8, 15, and 22 from 12:00 - 12:45 PM.

Please click HERE for the Zoom link.
